Cycling and Travelling around Japan

No more lines…

Posted on | March 23, 2011 | No Comments

Despite the colder weather this morning I decided to ride the bike in again. There were pretty stiff cross winds most of the way into work which didn’t make it the most pleasant of journeys. Makes me wonder when the spring weather will get here.

Many of the gas stations along the way were still closed but I noticed that there were no lines in front of the ones that were open. This despite some enormous lines (I counted 125 vehicles in one line) while cycling on Sunday.

SimplePie for RSS

Posted on | March 22, 2011 | No Comments

I have been working a fair amount with parsing RSS feeds for a personal project. I tried a few different PHP libraries but the easiest to use was SimplePie. It worked as expected pretty much right out off the bat and made it easy to go through feeds getting the items.

MagpieRSS is also popular but as it is not object orient but set up as a series of function made it difficult to work with in CakePHP. SimplePie is object oriented and made it a breeze to set up to work with in CakePHP.

Childrens video explaining nuclear situation

Posted on | March 18, 2011 | No Comments

I came across this video explaining the nuclear situation in Fukushima. It fairly accurate and presented in such a way that children can get some sort of grasp about what is going on. It could probably also be of use to those who don’t really understand how nuclear works and why the threat level is actually quite low (like those who have recently fled Tokyo)

Things slightly improving in Tokyo

Posted on | March 16, 2011 | No Comments

As more and more people seem to be fleeing to the West things appear to moving slowly back to normal in Tokyo. The stock at the local supermarkets seem to be slightly better than yesterday. In particular, fresh foods seem to be in reasonably good supply.

In the late evening yesterday, though, a strong earthquake came from a new direction: the base of Mt. Fuji. It was very strong locally at a 6-strong (2nd highest possible rating). With people already nervous about a variety of factors I heard people talk of worry that Mt. Fuji might erupt. As far as I know there is no  evidence to back that fear up.

I have found myself watching a geiger counter (http://park18.wakwak.com/~weather/geiger_index.html) thoughout the day and things generally seem to be close to normal expect for one 3-hour burst at double background.

Fresh Bread

Posted on | March 15, 2011 | No Comments

It seems weird to think of fresh bread as something special but in the bare-supermarket post-earthquake Tokyo it has become one.

I am riding my bike in each day so I rolled by Andersen on the way in and they were opening late due to delayed deliveries. I did manage to go back at their new opening time (9AM) and get some fresh bread. Looking forward to lunch!
