Local Fruits and Veggies

It has been some time since I have reported on the status of buying local.

I have managed to find a source just about all my fruits and vegetables.

JA (Japan Agriculture) runs stores all over Eastern Tokyo (which is where I live, Fuchu City ) and they have a large selection of fruits and vegetables grown in Fuchu. A link to the store’s website in Japanese is here. Since Fuchu is not that large of a city, it pretty much means that its all from within 5km of my house. Most of the stores that they operate only have a few opening hours each day which make it impossible for me to go after work and often arn’t open at all on the wekeends. The main store has much longer hours because it also runs a small convienice store to subsidize the longer hours. The result has been that I have gone pretty consistently every Saturday morning (If I hurry I can get there and back before I have to leave for work on a weekday as well). The selection was a bit unpredictable when I started going there in the early spring. But then I realised that its just what is in season and now that we are in the middle of summer the selection is quite impressive. The store even has local eggs (though I am disregarding at the moment where the feed came from to feed the hens).

In addition to being listed as local foods, the fruits and veggies are also “low chemical”. I am quite sure what that means but I will investigate and report back.

It think that it really is fantastic that I can get all local fruits and veggies in the biggest city on earth (Tokyo). The photo below is an example what I got one week. The flowers behind are also grown in Fuchu.

The net result has been that I buy 90-100% of fruits and vegetables from this store and as a result local.
