Bonus Blues

As I wrote in a previous entry. The president of the company that I work for decided that the company was not going to pay its employeees a bonus this year. (although there is a very slim chance that decision could be reversed at the end of this month) It has also turned out that the normal annual pay rise that is supposed to occur in September is also unlikely to happen.
Despite this the number of overtime hours has drastically increased in the last month. Many more people seem to be working much later than before. With no overtime pay and no bonus to speak of, the work literally has no compensation whatsoever. It just doesn’t cease to amaze me that some people around here are putting in three or four overtimes hours everyday with no compensation. Given that that is the case, it is difficult more me to believe that these people are not currently looking for alternative employment.
After it became clear that the chances of the bonus being payed out were very slim. I predicted that as a result eight people would quit the company. Other people have agreed that this is probably going to be the case, others have lowered the estimate slightly but not a single person estimated that the number would be less than 5. Already one person has quit. Last year after the bonus wasn’t paid out, I count 11 people that quit. Quite a large number for a company that employs barely 30 people, including the president and executives. In those 11 people that quit were several people that had worked for the company for a long time and had quite a lot of experience. They have been replaced with people who have no experience and as a result, the length of time that the average person has been working here has dropped, but it is difficult to put a value on that, especially when you are just looking at the bottom line.
