How to backup your Azure website

Posted on | March 22, 2013 | No Comments

Microsoft does not have a backup system available for its Websites in Azure.

However you can piece one together with the following two parts and add them to a cron to get a backup done each night

MYSQL: (database)

/usr/bin/mysqldump -h <server> -u <username> –password=<password> –single-transaction > sql`date “+\%Y-\%m-\%d”`.sql

FTP: (Files)

wget -r –level=0 –quiet -P `date “+\%Y-\%m-\%d”` ftp://<username (don’t forget to escape the slash)>:<password>@<server>

If you have loads of themes and uploads on the server it may take a few moments to get the copy done. I tested a default install and it took about 10 to 15 seconds. This is an incentive to reduce unnecessary clutter inside your wordpress installation.

Getting your MS Office into English! (for those of us who work abroad)

Posted on | November 28, 2012 | No Comments

Like many expats working in Japan (and other countries) we are often forced to use Microsoft products in languages other than our native language (in my case English). In many cases the help on-line is in English and then it is a guessing game for what the Japanese translation might be.

I did, finally, however find a way to get my Office 2007 into English from the website below which offers the English Language pack and I had no trouble at all getting it installed.

Nissan Skyline 250GT

Posted on | November 20, 2012 | No Comments

This past weekend, I took advantage of Nissan’s half price premium car rental campaign and rented the Skyline sedan (250GT) and went to Chichi with a few others.

Up until now rental cars had been small Toyota’s (Prius Aqua and Ractis) which were good cars but were not best at climbing hills. The Skyline was completely different, just put it in 2nd and it effortlessly went up the narrow twisty switchbacks. It felt so effortless and made it so easy. I didn’t wind up taking it on the highway but I am sure that it would have been very stable and easy able to ┬áhandle.

Having said that, the Skyline 250GT has a 225hp 2.5L engine and with the effortlessness that came with it I don’t understand what the necessity to opt for the 3.7L engine in the Skyline or other sedans with 4.0L+ sized engines. It seems very much like a case of diminishing returns.

The “children of the Corn Syrup” is a lecture given by Dr. Stephen Ponder and includes slides of the obesity and its current impact on children and also some physiological reasons for what is occurring. Definitely worth a watch.

Yet another, Nuclear Protest — Sigh

Posted on | June 29, 2012 | No Comments

There is yet another protest tonight in Tokyo to try and stop the Oii Nuclear reactor from being restarted.

I REALLY with these people would think about the consequences of their actions. More fossil fuels being burned and more greenhouse gasses.

Not a single person has died as a direct result of nuclear exposure since Chernobyl. Yet these protesters keep saying its dangerous. Perhaps they don’t know of the Kingston Fossil Plant coal fly ash slurry spill which contaminated huge amounts of land and water. Or do they think of the extra crime (and possible resulting dealth) from the jobs lost in the economy due to lack of electricity and rolling blackouts? NO They don’t.

If they had a proper plan moving forward to stop using Nuclear over 20 years and replace with renewable, I would be very open but all they and think is “stop nuclear now”, no matter what the consequences.
